HARRISBURG – Following the passage of the 2025-26 state budget, Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh) issued this statement:
“I couldn’t support parts of the budget because the General Appropriations bill spends more than the annual revenues our state collects from taxpayers. While there are things I don’t like about this agreement, I voted for several pieces of it that represent a commitment to core principles that put Pennsylvanians first.
“I support parts of the budget agreement that reassert the authority of the General Assembly by repealing, through statute, Wolf Administration regulations that forced Pennsylvania into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. This action restores legislative oversight, protects and helps in creating family-sustaining energy jobs, avoids what would have been a 30% increase in energy bills by 2030 and revitalizes our Commonwealth’s energy industry to help ensure a reliable energy grid. The agreement also expands expedited permitting for business development, something that will not only help our energy industry, but also spur economic growth throughout our Commonwealth.
“I also support the significant strides portions of this budget make to expand opportunity and reform welfare. We’re returning taxpayer money directly to low- to moderate-income working Pennsylvanians and their families through a new tax credit program that helps workers keep more of what they earn. And we’re reinforcing benefit integrity to ensure those who receive public assistance are those who truly need it. Reducing waste, fraud and abuse in our state’s public health programs will not only help rein in out-of-control spending, but it will also reduce health care costs for everyone.
“While I don’t agree with how much this budget spends, we were able to prevent tax hikes, avoid taking money out of the Rainy Day Fund and preserve planned tax reductions that will make Pennsylvania more competitive with other states.”
