HARRISBURG – Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) issued the following statement in response to the governor’s state budget address:

“Today’s budget address marks the beginning of the process, not the final product. The governor has proposed a $53.26 billion spending plan, which represents a 5.4% increase over last year. Now the House and Senate will begin the work of reviewing the details, asking tough questions and negotiating a budget that works for all Pennsylvanians.

While the proposal includes funding priorities that deserve discussion, it also raises serious concerns about long-term sustainability. The governor’s plan relies heavily on one-time solutions and new revenue sources to balance the books.”

Key elements of the governor’s proposal include:

• A 5.4% increase from last year.
• Raiding $4.5 billion from the Rainy Day Fund to support ongoing expenses.
• Legalizing recreational marijuana.
• Taxing skill games.

“Pennsylvania families deserve a responsible budget that supports essential services, protects taxpayers and avoids draining reserve funds that should be saved for true emergencies. I look forward to working with my colleagues to reach an agreement that reflects fiscal discipline and real priorities for the people we serve.”
