HARRISBURG – Rep. Jeff Olsommer (R-Wayne/Pike) today issued the following statement in in response to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s 2026-27 fiscal year budget proposal, a $53.26 billion plan that increases spending by 5.4% over the current year:

“The governor and House Democrats talk a lot about affordability, yet they continue to spend more than the Commonwealth brings in through revenue. What does the average household do? They make cuts! The average taxpayer can’t run their household like this, and neither should the Commonwealth.

“At the same time the governor claims to support affordability, he is backing regulations that stifle business growth and make it harder for families to afford a home or develop property. He also opposes the responsible development of Pennsylvania’s natural energy resources – resources that could spark economic growth, increase revenue and make life in our Commonwealth more affordable for everyone.

“This proposed budget looks to transfer $4.58 from the Rainy Day Fund because the proposed budget spends beyond what we are projected to take in for revenue. Our state budget should not be backfilled, but that is exactly what is happening here.”

The governor’s address is just the beginning of the annual state budget process. The House Appropriations Committee, of which Olsommer is a member, will conduct a series of hearings to examine the details of the governor’s plan and how state agencies are spending their funding. The hearings begin on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
