This year our amazing country will celebrate a milestone in our shared journey as a nation, as we reach our historic 250th anniversary.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the headlines, with stories about divisions and partisan battles, and get the sense we’re drifting further apart. It’s this division that makes it clear we need to renew our commitment to working as one team, one nation.

Across nearly 250 years we have many examples of “divided we fall,” proving our shared purpose has always been the key to our progress.

Here in Pennsylvania, the birthplace of our country, we are reminded every day differing viewpoints can still come together to serve the people of our state. Our House of Representatives is almost split down the middle, with Democrats having a narrow majority. Our Senate is similarly close, but Republicans hold a slight majority. Then, our governor is a Democrat. Together, these closely divided chambers highlight just how essential it is for us as leaders to reach across divides and find common ground.

I’m a member of the Meet Me in the Middle Caucus, a group dedicated to bringing leaders together to collaborate and advance meaningful solutions. I see the importance of working in a bipartisan manner to bridge differences and focus on ideas that make our state even better. Almost all 100 pieces of legislation I’ve either sponsored or co-sponsored have been bipartisan.

As we celebrate 250 years, let’s recommit to working side by side, advancing the shared future we can only build as one team, one nation.
