HARRISBURG—Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) has been appointed to, and named Secretary of, the newly formed House Oversight Committee.
“This is a special honor that brings with it a great responsibility,” Stephens said.
Stephens led the impeachment investigation into then-Attorney General Kathleen Kane. The subcommittee he chaired recommended the creation of a House Oversight committee to provide accountability, transparency and an outlet for whistleblowers who fear retaliation for reporting wrongdoing.
“The Kane investigation demonstrated that the House needed greater oversight to investigate potential wrongdoing in state agencies,” Stephens said. “This will be an important tool that will enhance transparency and accountability.”
The nine-member committee was created as part of the recently adopted House rules and is the only committee other than the Appropriations Committee with the power to issue subpoenas. The committee will investigate matters referred by the speaker, majority leader or minority leader.
