HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement in response to the City of Philadelphia’s plan to help drug addicts inject heroin and possibly other illegal drugs in supervised locations:
“Our state is in the midst of a deadly opioid crisis. In 2016, 4,642 drug-related overdose deaths occurred in Pennsylvania. We need to get each and every child and adult to ‘just say no’ to drug usage, and for those who have already gone down this road, we need to provide intervention and deliver treatment. Government should not condone or foster illegal drug use in any way.
“Philadelphia’s supervised drug addiction-enabling plan is misguided and a violation of state and federal law. I urge Gov. Tom Wolf and federal authorities to enforce the law.”
