HARRISBURG – Today the House Insurance Committee advanced legislation sponsored by Rep. Meghan Schroeder (R-Bucks) that would clarify state law to include custom-fabricated artificial devices under the definition of breast prosthetics covered by insurance.

“Most insurers cover reconstructive breast surgery and off-the-shelf breast prosthetics for post-mastectomy surgery, but there are situations when neither of these two options are reasonable,” said Schroeder. “Off-the-shelf prosthetics are not always possible if a woman has an irregular chest wall following a mastectomy or if she is not a good candidate for reconstructive surgery.
Custom breast prosthetics provide these women with another option, but some insurers do not provide coverage. My bill would correct this.”

House Bill 1457 passed unanimously in committee today and now goes to the full House for consideration.
