HARRISBURG – Legislation that would create a statewide registry of abandoned manufacturing sites, sponsored by Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne), was approved by the House Commerce Committee today.
House Bill 1104 would require the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to establish a registry for abandoned manufacturing sites, listing the contact information of each property’s owner and its current condition.
“As we know, Pennsylvania is part of the Rust Belt, so we’ve had a lot of deindustrialization. As a result, we have many untapped resources, included old manufacturing facilities and brownfields,” said Toohil. “The registry would help us become more business-friendly and attract investors from across the country and internationally to revitalize our struggling communities.”
Toohil’s proposal is included in the “Energize PA” legislative package, which is designed to put more Pennsylvania residents to work without imposing new fees or taxes. House Bill 1104 now goes to the House chamber for consideration.
