The first Acme grocery store in Delaware County licensed for private sale of wine and beer has begun operation thanks to legislation approved earlier this year in Harrisburg. Rep. Stephen Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) lauded the opening with other local lawmakers at a press conference on Thursday at Acme’s Concordville Town Centre Store, and said Pennsylvania is finally allowing the customer convenience that will keep shoppers from crossing state lines.

House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) has announced new legislation to increase state funding for Educational Improvement Tax Credits (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credits (OSTC) in Pennsylvania. The two programs give tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to a Scholarship Organization, an Educational Improvement Organization or a Pre-Kindergarten Scholarship Organization. Following a tour of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in South Philadelphia on Wednesday, the Speaker said the funding bump would help cut the waiting list for charter schools and provide new educational opportunities for thousands of Philadelphia students.

The manufactured home industry, a major employer in Clarion County and the surrounding region, is facing regulatory and economic challenges. Rep. Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion/Armstrong/Forest) hosted a House Majority Policy Committee hearing this week in Shippenville to allow legislators to learn more about the manufactured home industry. Rep. The first Pennsylvania convenience store licensed for private wine sales commenced operation Tuesday in Shippensburg, resulting from the passage of the Adult Beverage Convenience and Wine Privatization Act earlier this year. Rep. Adam Harris (R-Franklin, Mifflin), chairman of the House Liquor Control Committee, said this will provide much needed tax revenue to the state.

House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny), sponsor of the Adult Beverage Convenience and Wine Privatization Act, was joined by executives of the Sheetz Corporation and other state officials to mark the historic event. Speaker Turzai said the legislation is a significant step toward the modernization of wine and spirit sales in the state and represents a real improvement in consumer convenience.

On Wednesday, Gov. Tom Wolf spoke before a joint session of the General Assembly about Pennsylvania’s ongoing opioid and heroin abuse crisis, calling for the legislature to address access and abuse of the drugs, from prescription to disposal. Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming) said the House has been proactive on the issue, having already moved several pieces of key legislation.
