House Approves Rep. James’ Unemployment Compensation Reform Legislation Sparked by Local Plant Closing

The state House this week approved unemployment compensation reform legislation aimed at helping displaced workers, like those who recently lost their jobs at the Joy Global Inc. plant in Franklin. Prime sponsor Rep. Lee James (R-Venango & Butler), said the bill would help to improve the state’s unemployment compensation system by extending the appeals period, giving workers and employers additional time to review and appeal decisions on an unemployment claim.

Rep. Fee Comments on House Passage of Her Independent Inspector General Bill

Legislation designed to ensure the independence of the office of state Inspector General is on its way to the Governor’s Desk. House Bill 1618, sponsored by Rep. Mindy Fee (R-Lancaster) would place the office of Inspector General in statute, and would require Senate confirmation of any individual nominated for the office. Fee said this bill continues the bipartisan spirit of cooperation in rooting out wasteful practices in state government.

Rep. Boback Sponsors Measure Designating October 19th as Prescription Lock ‘Em Up Day in PA

In an effort to raise awareness about medication diversion and remind citizens to lock up their prescription drugs, the Pennsylvania House has approved a resolution designating October 19th as Lock ‘Em Up Day in Pennsylvania. Prime sponsor of House Resolution 1070, Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna, Luzerne & Wyoming) said the resolution was introduced in response to a rising number of thefts involving dangerous prescription drugs, particularly from senior citizens; and the need to build awareness about the risks of not storing drugs in a secure location.

Toohil’s No-Fault Divorce Bill Signed Into Law

Legislation designed to reduce the waiting time to obtain a no-fault divorce in Pennsylvania has been signed into law. Act 102 shortens the length of the separation period required for a no-fault divorce, and makes Pennsylvania’s divorce law similar to other neighboring states. Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne), prime sponsor of Act 102, said this change will allow families with children to finalize their new living situations in a more efficient and less turbulent manner.

House Approves Martina White's Sanctuary City Legislation

Legislation designed to prohibit “Sanctuary Cities” in the Commonwealth has been approved by the Pennsylvania House. Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia), sponsor of House Bill 1885, said her bill would require cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies, and ensure that individuals who have come to the country illegally and committed further crimes cannot find respite in communities in Pennsylvania.
