HARRISBURG – Rep. Jeff C. Wheeland (R-Lycoming) announced today he will serve on the House Local Government, State Government, Gaming Oversight and Liquor Control committees during the 2017-18 Legislative Session.
“The House Local Government Committee is a vital liaison to our district’s officials and represents those who work directly with our residents on a daily basis,” said Wheeland. “My experience as a former Lycoming County Commissioner enabled me to bridge the relationship between our local officials and Harrisburg. I look forward to continuing that work.”
Wheeland said his return to the House State Government Committee is welcome news.
“The work of the House State Government Committee is important for all Pennsylvanians to help ensure that government operates in an ethical manner,” said Wheeland. “The committee also has oversight responsibility for the Pennsylvania Election Code and the Right-to Know Law, among other issues.”
Wheeland said the advances made in the Commonwealth liquor system were a major accomplishment in the prior session.
“The movement toward privatization of the state’s archaic liquor system was helped by the work of the Liquor Control Committee,” said Wheeland. “We have much more to do in this session, but I believe the steps in modernizing the system represented a good start.”
The House Gaming Oversight Committee is expected to work on the issue of the municipal portion of the local share tax provision in the law that was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
“I know how important the local share issue is to our communities and this is certainly a top priority for the near-term,” said Wheeland. “Legislation is being drafted to fix this problem. The committee will be looking at other gaming options as well.”
