EAST STROUDSBURG – Northampton Community College (NCC) students participated in the Financial Literacy Reality Fair, which was co-hosted by state Representatives Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike), Marcia Hahn (R-Northampton) and Jack Rader (R-Monroe) and NCC, on Thursday, April 7, on the NCC campus. The event was sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU).

The Financial Literacy Reality Fair offered students a real-life simulation of personal financial management. Throughout the event, students participated in exercises, including managing a personalized budget with an expected career salary. Students had to navigate the needs and expenses they could encounter in everyday life, and faced the “Wheel of Reality” that presents life’s financial surprises.

Brown continues to be an advocate for promoting financial literacy for students of all ages. She held a similar event with East Stroudsburg High School South students in the fall.

“This event provided students with real-life examples and budget exercises, similar to the ones their parents face on a monthly basis,” Brown said. “I continue to focus on the high school level with these events, and we’re pleased to work with college students this year. I’m looking forward to keeping this initiative going with future events.” Brown has introduced legislation, House Bill 1958, that strives to have more high school students complete financial literacy coursework before graduating by allowing it to be considered a social studies requirement.

“Personal finance is an important life skill and I hope this event has helped to educate our young people,” Rader said. “We can set these young adults up for success by ensuring that they are prepared when they enter the workforce.”

“Financial literacy is a life skill best learned at the earliest age possible,” Hahn said. “From balancing a checkbook to learning the basics of money management, the time we spend teaching young people the do’s and don’ts of personal finance is a wise investment in their and our future.”
