HARRISBURG – House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) recently appointed Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Berks/Lehigh) to the statewide Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board.
The Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board serves as the Commonwealth’s principal private-sector policy adviser on building a strong workforce development system aligned with state education policies and economic development goals.
The board’s mission is to ensure that Pennsylvania’s entire workforce system, covering many programs in multiple departments and agencies, meets employers’ needs for skilled workers and workers’ needs for career and economic advancement. Additionally, the board is responsible for providing policy guidance and direction, evaluating performance and recommending continuous improvements.
Mackenzie has taken a lead role in the General Assembly on workforce development issues, including the introduction of a private-public educational initiative to provide secondary school students with exposure to job training in high-demand fields. That legislation, known as “CareerBound,” would prepare young people for the careers of tomorrow while deepening the talent of the state’s labor pool, a critical component of attracting entrepreneurial investment. The measure passed the House and now awaits consideration in the Senate.
“I am honored to be appointed to the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board,” said Mackenzie. “One of the core priorities of state government is working to attract job creators to our state by making Pennsylvania more competitive in the global marketplace. I look forward to addressing the employment and educational challenges facing Pennsylvania and working with my colleagues to craft innovative solutions and programs to promote the development of good-paying, family-sustaining jobs.”
During the 2015-16 session, Mackenzie serves as the house deputy whip, as well as vice chair of the Labor and Industry Committee and deputy chair of the Majority Policy Committee. Prior to his election to the Legislature, Mackenzie served as policy director for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
