HARRISBURG – The House Select Subcommittee on Technical Education and Career Readiness, chaired by Rep. Seth Grove (R-York), held its first hearing today in Harrisburg. The hearing focused on the ways students in kindergarten through 12th grade are being prepared for careers in technical fields.
The subcommittee was created as a result of House Resolution 102, with a goal of examining technical education across the Commonwealth in order to connect secondary and post-secondary students with jobs that are in demand.
“We need to help students discover the options that exist outside the traditional four-year college environment,” Grove said. “Jobs in high demand technical fields are currently going unfilled. In a world that runs on technology, it is clear that there is more work to be done when it comes to preparing students for the workforce of the 21st century.”
During today’s hearing, subcommittee members heard from state officials about programs in Pennsylvania’s high schools intended to expose students to opportunities in technical careers, work release programs using employers in these industries and efforts through grant funding to help school districts purchase state-of-the-art equipment.
“I truly believe Pennsylvania is on the cusp of being an economic powerhouse,” Grove added. “Connecting students with the education they need to secure these in-demand jobs is essential to the Commonwealth’s future.”
The next subcommittee hearing is planned for Thursday, May 28, at the Reading Area Community College, and will focus on higher education.
