HARRISBURG – Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom) released the following statement on the passage of
House Bill 1200, which would legalize marijuana in Pennsylvania.
“Today, House Democrats passed House Bill 1200, which would legalize the recreational use of marijuana across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This legislation is not just poorly written; it is a bad idea that will do more harm for the people of Pennsylvania than good.
“House Bill 1200 does not answer many of the same questions and concerns I raised nine years ago when we discussed the medical marijuana program. Specifically, the federal classification of marijuana still has not been addressed, with the federal government having postponed the process to reclassify marijuana indefinitely.
“On top of that, as I said on the floor today, we continue to hear from my colleagues on the other side of the chamber about how prohibition does not work. But when pushed on how we will make sure our young children are not affected by this, we are told that the answer is prohibiting the marketing of marijuana to children and in their spaces. I question how that will succeed when we are told time and time again that prohibition does not work.
“In the end, I feel this legislation is premature. Far too many concerns and questions are not answered by House Bill 1200, and it falls far short on revenue and policy. I was a “no” today and will continue to be a “no” on this issue until these questions and concerns are answered.”
