HARRISBURG – In working to develop sound public policies to address Pennsylvania’s most critical issues, House Majority Policy Committee Chairman Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion/Armstrong/Forest) today announced that 10 of her colleagues will serve as deputy Policy Committee chairmen for the 2019-20 legislative session.
Oberlander said the slate reflects the geographic diversity of the Commonwealth while also benefiting from the broad range of legislative, professional and community experiences shared by the selected members.
“I am very excited to work with these talented and dedicated leaders who bring an enormous amount of public and private sector experience to the House and to the Majority Policy Committee,” said Oberlander. “Together, we will be examining a wide range of issues that impact Pennsylvania residents and working to develop sound public policies which we anticipate introducing and advancing through the House this session.”
The new deputy Policy Committee chairmen include:
• Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland). Delozier, who is starting her sixth term, has worked in several capacities within state government and is one of the Legislature’s leading advocates for crime victims. She also has an extensive background working to make state government more efficient.
• Rep. Mindy Fee (R-Lancaster). Fee, in her fourth term, has more than two decades of small business experience. During her time in the House, she has authored successful measures to improve government transparency and school safety.
• Rep. Marcia Hahn (R-Northampton). In her fifth term, Hahn brings her three decades of experience as a legislative staff member to help cut government red tape, assist families in crisis and improve public safety. This is her second term as a deputy Policy Committee chairman.
• Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton). In his second term, Mako is a current member of the Pennsylvania National Guard and has sponsored legislation to enhance career and technical education to help fill in-demand jobs.
• Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Westmoreland). Nelson, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps with distinguished overseas deployments, has been an entrepreneur and businessman creating jobs and meeting budgets for years. He also has experience in the classroom as a professor within the State System of Higher Education. This is also Nelson’s second term as a deputy policy chairman.
• Rep. Chris Quinn (R-Delaware). Quinn, who is beginning his second full term, worked in the global electronics manufacturing industry and was a member of a local industrial development authority, which finances economic and industrial development projects.
• Rep. Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield/Cambria). Sankey, also in his fourth term, relies on his own background as a job creator to author new laws that are helping individuals in need find employment and allowing businesses to operate more efficiently.
• Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks). In his third term, Staats has decades of experience in the restaurant industry, as a business broker who conducted business sales and acquisitions and promoted business growth and job creation by matching entrepreneurs with business opportunities. In addition to his local government experience at the township level, Staats is a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
• Rep. Justin Walsh (R-Washington/Fayette). Walsh, who is in his second term, brings his legal experience to the House and the Policy Committee. His legislative record includes sponsoring reforms to bring transparency and accountability to government.
• Rep. Jeff Wheeland (R-Lycoming). Wheeland, in his third term, is a former county commissioner who worked in his family’s business before starting a second one on his own. As a local elected official, he worked closely to help responsibly develop natural gas drilling in his region.
The House Majority Policy Committee conducts hearings and roundtable discussions about important statewide and regional issues that matter most to Pennsylvania citizens; gathers testimony and information from key stakeholders; and works within the House Republican Caucus to develop policies to address those issues. The Policy Committee also works in tandem with the speaker and majority leader to examine and refine critical pieces of legislation in advance of floor consideration.
“This dynamic team – which brings a wealth of experiences in government and in business – will help me and the Policy Committee look at issues from a different lens so that we can craft solutions to the most pressing issues facing our residents and our communities,” Oberlander said. “I’m eager to get started.”
